Estimate under the funding guideline of 19 May 2026 as of October 2026, not advice. Only the BAFA grant decision is binding, and there is no legal entitlement. How we calculate
Step-by-step calculation
- Household income: (€38,000 + €40,000) / 2 = €39,000, the average of the last two tax assessments.
- Children counted: 0. Income limit: €80,000 + €5,000 per child = €80,000.
- Band from the guideline table: Band 1: up to €45,000. Battery electric with 0 child(ren): €5,000.
- First registration in November 2026: inside the funding period (battery electric cars until 31 December 2029).
- Price after the grant: €24,650 − €5,000 = €19,650. The grant is paid into your account after registration; the dealer does not deduct it.
The Hyundai Inster is a small, tall city car that Hyundai offers as the Inster Select, 42 kWh for €24,650, with up to 327 km of WLTP range. Hyundai states that this offer is valid until 31 December 2026. With the German EV grant, the Inster costs a household with no child and taxable income of at most €45,000 €19,650, with two children €18,650. In the second band up to €60,000 it is €20,650 without children, in the third up to €80,000 €21,650. BAFA had approved 3,337 applications for the Inster by 1 October 2026, 6th among all models and two thirds of all approvals for the Hyundai brand. Against 10,119 new registrations since January there are 33.0 % approvals, one of the highest figures in the statistics. Unlike the Leapmotor T03, registrations peaked before applications opened, in April.
The Inster after the grant
The table deducts each amount in the guideline from the €24,650 list price. The calculation uses the household’s taxable income, averaged over the last two tax assessments of each adult.
| household taxable income | no child | 1 child | 2 children |
|---|---|---|---|
| €0 to €45,000 | €19,650 | €19,150 | €18,650 |
| €45,001 to €60,000 | €20,650 | €20,150 | €19,650 |
| €60,001 to €80,000 | €21,650 | €21,150 | €20,650 |
| €80,001 to €85,000 | no grant | €21,150 | €20,650 |
| €85,001 to €90,000 | no grant | no grant | €20,650 |
Three households as examples. A single retired woman with taxable income of €28,000 pays €19,650; how pensions count and what applies without a tax assessment is under pensioners. A couple with one child on €64,000 is in the third band and pays €21,150. A couple without children on €81,000 is just above the basic limit of €80,000 and gets nothing: for them the price stays at €24,650.
The last example shows how sharply the limit bites. One euro above €80,000 without children costs the full €3,000 grant on the Inster. Because the average of two assessments counts, a year of short-time work, parental leave or part-time work can tip the balance. The details are under income limit.
Registrations: the peak came before the start
| Month | New registrations |
|---|---|
| January | 694 |
| February | 918 |
| March | 1,315 |
| April | 1,520 |
| May | 1,423 |
| June | 1,187 |
| July | 1,294 |
| August | 878 |
| September | 890 |
The Inster behaves differently from most small cars. Registrations peaked in April at 1,520, before BAFA opened applications in May. From January to April the average was 1,112 a month, from June to September 1,062. One possible explanation: the grant applies retroactively to registrations from 1 January 2026. Spring buyers therefore lost nothing and could apply later. The approval statistics suggest that many did.
The grant for a spring purchase
If you registered your Inster before applications opened, you still have time, but not unlimited time. The deadline is 12 months from first registration. For a registration on 15 April 2026 it ends on 15 April 2027. The 36-month holding period also runs from registration, not from the application; in this example it ends on 14 April 2029. BAFA describes the application in its portal; which documents to have ready is under application.
The Inster in its class
| Model | List price | Battery | Range | net to €60,000, 1 child | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Citroën ë-C3 | €20,140 | 29.3 kWh | 215 km | €15,640 | 23.6 % |
| Hyundai Inster | €24,650 | 42.0 kWh | 327 km | €20,150 | 33.0 % |
| Fiat 500e | €25,990 | 21.0 kWh | 190 km | €21,490 | 28.4 % |
| Renault Renault 5 | €26,290 | 40.0 kWh | n/a | €21,790 | 27.6 % |
| Kia EV2 | €26,600 | 42.2 kWh | 317 km | €22,100 | 24.9 % |
| Renault Renault 4 | €27,690 | n/a | n/a | €23,190 | 31.7 % |
Among the models in this group with a range figure, the Inster goes furthest, at a price in the lower middle. The Citroën ë-C3 is cheaper but, in the trim with the smaller battery, does not go as far. The Kia EV2 comes from the same group and is technically closely related. On funded purchases the Inster leads: its ratio of approvals to registrations is the highest in the group.
Inster and Kona: two Hyundais, two kinds of buyer
Of the 4,988 approvals for the Hyundai brand, 3,337 are for the Inster and 1,084 for the larger Kona Electric. On registrations, the Kona at 5,379 is not that far behind the Inster at 10,119. The Kona costs €38,340 as the Kona Elektro Select, 49 kWh and is bought more often as a company car or by households above the income limit. The Inster, by contrast, is a typical car for private households on middle incomes, exactly the group the grant is meant to reach.
The Inster as a second car
Many households see the Inster as a second car for town and commuting, alongside a larger car for holidays and family. That is no problem for the grant: a household can make up to 2 applications, one per person. If one partner buys the Inster and the other later buys a second electric car, both receive their household’s amount, provided the applicant in each case is the registered keeper. The same household income counts for both, formed from both partners’ assessments. If the household is in the second band at the first application and, a year later with newer assessments, in the third, the second car gets correspondingly less; each application is checked against the assessments that are the latest at its time. An electric second car pays off especially if it can charge at home. What a wallbox costs and which subsidies exist for it is under wallbox.
Running costs
A battery electric car first registered by 31 December 2030 pays no vehicle tax for 10 years, until 31 December 2035 at the latest. The GHG quota payment brings money every year, over €300 at October market prices. With the Inster’s low price, these two items make up a noticeable part of the purchase price over the holding period. The biggest difference in daily use, though, is the electricity price: charging at home is much cheaper than at public fast chargers.
Just before buying
- Check whether your household is under the limit for your number of children, with the calculator above.
- Register the Inster in your own name; the keeper must be the applicant.
- A dealer’s demonstrator or pre-registered car does not qualify, even if it is almost new.
- Apply after registration and before 12 months have passed.
